ACUPARIA is a non-profit public-law foundation for the promotion of nature and environmental protection in Iceland. This is to be achieved in particular through the (re)afforestation of areas at risk of erosion and the creation of wetland biotopes. On the project pages you can follow how these two main concerns of ACUPARIA are being realised.

Forest

At the time of the settlement of Iceland around 900 AD, approximately 25-30% of Iceland was covered with trees and 30-35% with other plants.  Today 75% of the country is completely deserted. Only about 1% of our land is still covered with forests. Since the settlement, 3.8 million hectares of grown land have been lost. More.

Wetlands

A wetland is a distinct ecosystem that is flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally, where oxygen-free processes prevail. The term wetland encompasses various habitat types of flora and fauna, such as floodplain, forest, wet meadow, bog, reed, swamp, marsh ditch or marshland. Wetlands are of great importance for birds.
